AMERICUS - With all goals coming in the second half, the Georgia Southwestern women's soccer team defeated Brewton-Parker College, 3-0, on Wednesday afternoon at Hurricane Field. The Lady Hurricanes, winners of two straight, have won consecutive 3-0 decisions.
Despite rattling off a season-high 13 shots in the opening 45 minutes, GSW could not break the scoreless tie until the second stanza.
Hannah Burnsed made her first six saves for Brewton-Parker (1-5) to keep the match even until the 54th minute. That's when Julia Wells poked in a deflected shot from Zada Hyatt for her first goal of the season.
The lead quickly doubled as just over a minute later Jennifer Starvetsky found the back of the net off a header from eight yards out with Hyatt picking up the assist.
GSW tacked on the final goal in the 66th minute when Ally Canganelli's low punch from inside the box angled far post past Burnsed for her second goal of 2011.
The Lady Hurricanes finished with 23 shot attempts, the most in a match since posting 58 on Oct. 20, 2008 at Wesleyan College. The 12 corner kicks on Wednesday is a school record.
Starting GSW goalkeeper Amber Bahri and freshman Jordyn Birchett teamed for the Lady 'Canes second shutout of the season. The Southwestern defense held BPC to two shots and no corner kicks in the match.
GSW had lost the previous two meetings with the Lady Barons by a combined 6-1 score and Wednesday's victory marks the second time Southwestern has defeated BPC in six attempts.
The Lady Hurricanes (3-4) look to make it three "W"s in a row on Saturday when Georgia College comes to town to open Peach Belt Conference play at 5 p.m.
