AMERICUS - Senior defender Nicole Hudson scored her first collegiate goal and sophomore Julia Wells added another to pull the Georgia Southwestern women's soccer team within a goal (3-2) in the second half only to watch Columbus State answer with the final two scores of the match for a 5-2 victory on Wednesday afternoon at Hurricane Field.
GSW entered the contest scoreless against the Lady Cougars since the annual matchup began in 2006.
Kansas Bayly scored the first two goals of the match to give CSU (7-3-2, 2-2-1 PBC) a 2-0 lead 20 minutes in. Josefin de Broen gave the Lady Cougars a three-goal lead in the 24th minute off of a GSW turnover inside the box.
The Lady Hurricanes began their comeback late in the first half when Hudson gathered a loose ball 20 yards out and sailed a shot over CSU goalkeeper Mary Mancin.
GSW made things interesting out of the break when Wells gathered a deflected feed from Zada Hyatt, drove along the left side of the box and rifled a shot far post for her second goal of the season.
Kelsey Pelletier gave CSU some breathing room in the 65th minute with her goal and Stephanie Lowery converted a penalty kick in the 87th minute to complete the scoring.
CSU held a manageable 9-5 advantage in shots on goal. GSW goalkeeper Amber Bahri stopped four. Mancin saved two for the Lady Cougars and Katlin Stephens saved one during her 45 minutes of play.
It was the first multi-goal match for GSW in conference play since a 2-1 win at Lander on Oct. 7, 2006.
The Lady Hurricanes (3-8, 0-3 PBC) hit the road for a pair of matches, the first coming Saturday at 7:30 p.m. against USC Aiken.
