Unable to Repeat Against West Alabama

AMERICUS - The Georgia Southwestern women's tennis team was unable to match last year's 5-4 victory over West Alabama, as the Tigers reversed the score on Saturday and defeated GSW, 5-4, at the Susan K. Smith Tennis Complex.  The Hurricane men suffered a 9-0 setback against UWA.

GSW WOMEN 4, WEST ALABAMA 5

Kalie Douberly did what she could to help the Lady Hurricanes get a win against the Tigers. Douberly was the only GSW player to earn wins in both doubles and singles. Douberly teamed with Melinda Vansant for an impressive 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles. She then took care of business at No. 2 singles with a 6-1, 0-6, 6-3 win over Angy Cuellar.

The Lady Hurricanes led 2-1 after doubles action with the other victory coming at No. 1 where Carly Cangelosi and Ginny Jones pulled out an 8-5 win over Jill Furlong and Lisa Becker.

UWA rallied for four wins on the singles side. The other singles victor for GSW came at No. 4 where Victoria Ondo defeated Becker 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.

GSW drops to 3-7 overall this spring. UWA evens its record at 5-5.

GSW MEN 0, WEST ALABAMA 9

The Georgia Southwestern men's tennis team stumbled against West Alabama after playing No. 11 Flagler tough a day earlier.

Every singles match went three sets against Flagler, but on Saturday the 'Canes managed only one three-setter as Joseph Bjerregaard lost to Adam Drysdale 6-7, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2.

The Hurricanes best chance for a victory came in doubles where the No. 1 and No. 3 teams lost 8-5 and the No. 2 team of Stephen Moore and Chris Eastwood suffered an 8-6 loss.

GSW has lost five straight and is 3-8 this spring. The Tigers improve to 6-4 overall.
