Another Record-Breaking Performance

WEST POINT - Jessi Young broke her own school record and Lisa Espino and Mollie McGowan ran personal bests to lead the Georgia Southwestern women's cross country team to a third-place finish at the Point Invitational on Friday.

Young shaved 38 seconds off the record-setting time she posted last week at the Darton Invite and finished with a 20:03 which was good for third overall in the field of 76.

Espino was second across the line for the Lady Hurricanes finishing in 21:17. Espino finished 11th overall and knocked 18 seconds off of her personal-best time.

McGowan made the biggest jump for GSW on Friday as her time of 22:32 eclipsed her personal-best mark by 49 seconds. The three-year member of the Lady 'Canes finished 24th.

Micah Bucher finished 30th with a time of 23:09.

Nakora Mackey was nipping at Bucher's heels and grabbed the fifth slot for GSW, crossing the finish line 31st overall, a second behind her teammate.

Linda Esparza (23:24) and Kaitlin Wilkinson (25:30) ran season-best times shaving off 19 and 32 seconds, respectively.

"The girls ran a great race," said GSW head coach Brittney Skiles. "This course was by far the toughest course we have run all season. The fact that they all ran their best times on this course shows that they are all getting stronger and mentally tough."

In a tiebreaker, Darton State College edged Savannah College of Art & Design Atlanta for the team title.  Both schools finished with 66 points.

Heather Smith from Spelman College crossed the finish line first with a time of 19:50.

Next up for the Lady Hurricanes is the Berry College Viking Open on Oct. 13 at 10 a.m. in Rome, Ga.
