ALBANY - The Georgia Southwestern women's cross country team opened their 2012 season on Saturday morning with a third-place finish at the Darton Invitational hosted by Darton State College. Junior Lisa Espino led the Lady Hurricanes on the 5K Cavalier Trails course with a career-best time of 21:46. Espino finished 12th in the five-team event.
Freshman Jessi Young followed closely behind Espino for GSW with a time of 21:54 and sophomore Micah Bucher grabbed the third slot for the Lady Hurricanes, crossing the finish line 20th overall at 23:05.
Junior Mollie McGowan finished fourth on the team with a time of 24:41 and senior Nakora Mackey's 24:58 earned the fifth - and final - GSW score.
With 15 points, Columbus State finished ahead of Darton State College (58) for the team title.
Moneque English from CSU crossed the finish line first with a time of 20:21. CSU took the top five slots in a field of 39 runners.
Southwestern hosts the Third Annual Georgia Southwestern Remembrance Run on Sept. 8 at Southland Academy in Americus. Start time is 8:30 a.m.
