Remembrance Run Draws Record Turnout; Lady Canes 10th Of 12 Teams

AMERICUS - The Georgia Southwestern cross country team finished in 10th place out of 12 teams at the Fourth Annual GSW Remembrance Run held Saturday morning at the Sumter County Parks and Recreation Sports Complex. Jessi Young paced the Lady Hurricanes by finishing the 6K course in 25:00.76 for 28th place out of an event-record 100 competitors.

Lisa Espino opened her senior campaign with a time of 26:40.06, good for 60th place while Dana Woods was the third GSW runner across the line in 28:01.26. Linda Esparza finished 76th overall by finishing in 28:22.40 and Raven Martin took 79th in 29:03.37. Mikaela Shimko posted a time of 33:07.94.

With 43 points, Columbus State finished ahead of Clayton State (80) for the team title. 

Cheyenne Thompson from the University of Montevallo crossed the finish line first overall with a time of 23:05.99.

A total of nine Peach Belt Conference schools participated in the women's race today to get an early look at the course. The PBC Championships will field 12 teams when the event comes to the Sumter Country Parks and Recreation Sports Complex on Oct. 26.

The Lady Hurricanes return to action Thursday when they head to Columbus State for a dual meet with the Cougars.
