Young Leads the Lady Hurricanes at Skiles Farm Run

Albany, Ga. - The Georgia Southwestern cross country team competed in their third meet on Saturday at the Skiles Farm Run hosted by Darton College. The Lady Hurricanes finished in 2nd place out of five teams.

"All the girls had a great race," comments Head Coach Brittney Skiles. "They came out to the course with their minds made up to race and it showed in their performance."

Sophomore Jessi Young led the way with a time of 19:42.06 for the 1st place finish. Not only did Young set a new personal record, but she set the new course record.

"Jessi ran a very strategic race," said Coach Skiles. "She made her move when I told her to, passed two girls, and finished the race strong."

Lisa Espino was the next Lady Hurricane to finish in 7th place (21:31.39). Not far behind, Daria Woods finished in 9th place (21:55.81). Linda Esparza finished next in 11th place (22:14.12).

Rounding out the field for the Lady Hurricanes was Raven Martin finishing in 16th place (22:48.81), and Mikaela Shimko finishing in 22nd place (24:43.94).

Woods, Martin, and Shimko also achieved new personal records during this meet.

"It was a very exciting race to watch," comments Coach Skiles. "I was very happy with all the girls and they were very happy with their performances as well."

The Lady Hurricanes finished in 2nd place with a total of 44 points. There were a total of 5 teams and 33 runners. Darton College finished 1st with a total of 31 points.

The team will be back in action on Saturday, October 5th as they travel to Oxford, Ala. for the Gem of the Hills Invitational hosted by Jacksonville State University. The runs are expected to begin at 10 a.m.
