Lady Canes Finish 4th in Season Opener

CARROLLTON, Ga. - The Georgia Southwestern State University women's cross country team finished in fourth place out of five schools at the Gary Wilson Invitational hosted by the University of West Georgia on Saturday afternoon at the UWG Athletic Complex. Quincy Mayer paced the Lady Hurricanes by completing the 5K course in a time of 22:54.28 to take 26th place out of 37 competitors.

Due to safety protocol as a result of COVID-19, the 10-team event was divided into two separate five-team races. The Lady Hurricanes earned a pre-event seeding that placed them in the faster of the two races. The University of Alabama in Huntsville had all five of its runners finish in the top 10 and earned a cumulative score of 30 points to capture the team title, ahead of the University of North Georgia (34). Columbus State University (76) grabbed third place ahead of GSW (122) and the University of West Alabama (130).

Sarah Earley crossed the finish line second for GSW on Saturday with a time of 24:09, good for 28th place. The Lady Hurricanes took slots 30 through 32 as the trio of Brianna Zupko (24:38), Madaline Toth (24:44) and Anna Parker (25:21) completed the course. It was the first collegiate race for freshmen Zupko and Parker. Grace Regan rounded things out for GSW in 27:49.

Kaylee Stewart from Alabama-Huntsville crossed the finish line first overall with a time of 18:33.78.

The Lady Hurricanes return to action Saturday, Oct. 31, when they travel to Oakwood, Ga., for the PBC Preview hosted by the University of North Georgia.
