    Georgia Southwestern pitchers Gray Carden and Trent Franzago, along with shortstop John Duran kicked off their respective collegiate summer league baseball seasons this past weekend. Carden and Franzago are playing for the North Adams (Mass.) SteepleCats of the New England Collegiate Baseball League and Duran is representing GSW on the Stark County (Ohio) Terriers of the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate Baseball League.

    Georgia Southwestern outfielder Michel Coffey and designated hitter Corey Benson were named to the 2011 All-Peach Belt Conference Second Team as announced by the PBC on Saturday night at a banquet in Columbus, Ga., on the eve of the league’s championship tournament at Golden Park.

    Georgia Southwestern designated hitter Corey Benson has been named the Peach Belt Conference Baseball Freshman of the Week. Benson hit .588 (10-for-17) in four games last week with three doubles, five RBIs and three runs scored. He had a .756 slugging percentage and .611 on-base percentage.

    Sixth-ranked Francis Marion University exploded for a dozen runs on 23 hits and the Patriots beat Georgia Southwestern 12-3 on Friday evening at Hurricane Stadium. The two teams will conclude their three-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.

    Georgia Southwestern fought its way back from a three-run deficit and never looked back as the Hurricanes defeated Thomas University (Ga.), 12-6, on Wednesday evening in non-conference baseball action. GSW doubled up Thomas in runs and hits, as the Hurricanes belted 18 hits to the Night Hawks nine. Michel Coffey and Corey Benson had four hits apiece to lead the assult. The Hurricanes hit .470 (8-for-17) with runners in scoring position.

    A two-out, two-run rally in the bottom of the ninth inning by Columbus State in Game 1 of a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader against Georgia Southwestern on Sunday afternoon lifted the 19th-ranked Cougars to a 2-1 victory at Ragsdale Field. CSU scored seven runs over the first two innings of Game 2 for a 7-2 win and series sweep of the Hurricanes.

Georgia College scored the final six runs in the nightcap to win the second game of the afternoon, 9-4.

GSW made the most of its scoring opportunities, as all six hits came with runners on base. The Hurricanes improve to 9-6 this spring, while the BPC falls to 12-4. GSW has won all three meetings between the schools since 2007, the first season the 'Canes were NCAA Division II members.
